DUE TODAY “Pack Mentality” CATCH Notes HOMEWORK CORNER - Standard: RL 7.3 Objective: SWBAT determine the “unforgettable lesson” that Buck learns during his first day at Dyea Beach by writing a CEEEEL paragraph. Do Now (10 minutes) Students will complete the Reading Check quiz at the beginning of class. Direct/Collab. Station Buck has learned several lessons and gained many insights about his new life as a captured dog. In our reading today, Buck will arrive at a place we may recognize the name of, and learn an incredibly important lesson that will shape his thinking for the rest of his experience as a captured dog. We will work to understand what that lesson is, and why Buck learns this lesson. Essential Question: London claims Buck learns an “unforgettable lesson” during his first day at Dyea Beach. What is the lesson and how does he learn it? Teacher will guide students through pages 8-9 (“Buck’s first day...deathless hatred.”)using AIR (Accountable Independent Reading). Students will answer guiding questions throughout the guided reading in the student packet. When finished with this short section, students will have a chance to prepare their initial responses to the essential question, finding the strongest piece of evidence to support their assertions (3 min.) Students will have 8-10 minutes to collaboratively discuss/synthesize their thoughts in preparation for the exit ticket (CEEEEL paragraph). Independent Station Rotation A: Students will make up missing Anthology work, then work on iReady Lessons. Rotation B: Students will read from p.9-13 independently, answering the remaining comprehension questions in their student packets. DUE TODAY

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of class to realign and make sure that everyone is on the same page in the book (literally and figuratively!). “The Secrets Inside Your Dog’s Mind” article (CATCH) HOMEWORK CORNER
Scholars will complete their Reading Check quiz on “The Secrets Inside Your Dog’s Mind.” Direct Station (40 min.): Call of the Wild pages 5 - 8 and comprehension questions. Once finished with reading/comprehension questions, students will answer the essential question: How does Buck’s capture change his personality and why? DUE TODAY
“Sled Dog” article (CATCH + Answer essential question) HOMEWORK CORNER
DO NOW Scholars will complete their first Reading Check quiz. From now on, there will be reading check quizzes in order to hold students accountable for homework readings. Direct Station (40 min.): Today is an exciting day, because we will begin our core text for unit 3, Call of the WIld. In these opening pages, we will be introduced to our protagonist and work to understand his personality and why he behaves the way he does. These opening pages are incredibly important for us to understand in order to meaningfully engage with the rest of the novel, so we will go through these pages section by section. Scholars will receive Comprehension Questions to complete. I will provide scholars will time guidance, and will be aggressively monitoring student progress using our feedback symbols. After finishing p.3-5 and the questions, scholars will write their response to the essential question: How does the setting at Judge Miller’s estate shape Buck’s personality? Independent Station (40 min. rotation): Scholars in Rotation 1 will begin reading “The Secrets Inside Your Dog’s Mind” and completing CATCH annotations. If scholars finish early, they may start reading the first 5 pages of Call of the Wild. Scholars in Rotation 2 will complete their exit tickets, then begin “The Secrets Inside Your Dog’s Mind.” WELCOME BACK, BANANAS!!!! Today is a 1-3-5-Advisory Schedule! DUE TODAY - HOMEWORK CORNER If you did not finish the "Sled Dog" reading (CATCH + Answer essential question), it must be done by the beginning of class tomorrow. ***there will be a quiz!*** Standards: RI 7.2 Objective: SWBAT explain why people went to the Klondike and describe their experiences by taking video notes and writing a CEEEEL paragraph. Do Now (10 minutes) Read a book silently. Direct Station (40 min.): Today is a very exciting day because today, we will begin our third unit of the year: Call of the Wild, by Jack London. To begin this unit, we must first develop an understanding of the world the author was writing in response to. We will begin that exploration today as we examine a moment in American history known as the Klondike Gold Rush. We will start by reading the article "Klondike Gold Rush" (Anthology Page 1) in pairs. I will be stopping us along the way to check for understanding. We will also be watching a video on the Klondike Gold Rush. Students will take video notes on the provided graphic organizer. Exit ticket must be written in the form of a CEEEEL paragraph and turned in to the bin. Independent Station (40 min. rotation): Step 1: Read "Sled Dog of the North" in your Anthology booklet (page 10, and a little bit of page 11), use CATCH annotations and answer the essential question: "What is the Central Idea of the Article?" (on the page of the article!) STEP 2: EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY! Log into Brainpop and watch the video titled "Jack London". Use username: 123dog, password: 123cat. Instructions for you task is on page 11 of the Anthology booklet. Step 3: If you finish by the end of the rotation, put your Anthology in your class folder.
