Read something you enjoy! Unless you have makeup work. Then, do that. DUE TODAY iReady: 3 lessons Achieve: see tracker for advisory and enrichment Standard: R.L.7.2 SWBAT determine how Buck has changed since the beginning of the story and identify the causes of those changes. Direct Station/ Collaborative Students will read The Call of the Wild pages 13 - 14 and answer comprehension questions in groups in preparation for the exit ticket. Independent Students will complete makeup lessons. Good afternoon, students. Please note this (hopefully temporary) important change to our class structure.
Students will only be considered "prepared" for class if they meet the following criteria: 1. Student has completed all previous lessons. 2. Student has completed all homework. 3. Student is up to date in their reading. Prepared Students Students that ARE prepared for class will be able to "attend the lecture." This means that they will be allowed to participate in the lesson in Direct Station led by Ms. Francavillo. These students will be awarded extra merits for Displaying Leadership, participating actively in groups, and Entering Class Ready to Learn. Unprepared Students Students that ARE NOT prepared for class will "miss the lecture." This means that they will be in Independent Station making up their missing work. Students may join the lecture when they have completed and turned in all assignments and met the other criteria for preparedness. This change is being made for a few reasons: 1. At Alliance MIT, we are building the skills and habits of mind necessary to compete in college. When you are in college, if you "miss the lecture," that means that you missed instruction. The only way to make up work is to attend office hours ("tutoring"), ask good questions, seek help, and work with determination. Nobody in college is going to RETEACH the lecture to you. At the end of the day, you will not learn as much if you are not present. In this class, being present means being prepared. 2. We are on a schedule to finish this unit and more novels this year. In order for us to keep moving forward and progressing as scholars, we need to make efficient use of our time. This is particularly important in semester 2, because our school year will be interrupted by state testing in May. This may seem like it is very far away, but time goes by very fast! 3. It is simply not fair (and quite frankly, insulting) to the scholars that DO complete their work. Students should not have to sit idle and lose valuable instructional time because other students in class do not "want" to read their books. In life, reading is not an optional activity. Same goes for English class. What you can do If you do not finish your work in class, it is expected that you will continue to work during Advisory time. If you are in Ms. Bartlett's class, you should come to my room and borrow a copy of the book if you need it. You should also take advantage of any time that your elective teachers give you for PLT. I always give my elective students 1 hour of PLT time, which I know that many teachers also do. You may also come work in my room during lunch on EVEN PERIOD days. These are my tutoring/office hours. This is what you should do if you are having trouble or do not understand something. If you do not finish the work at school, you may ASK FOR PERMISSION to borrow a book so that you can complete the work for homework or during All Stars. You SHOULD NOT: -email me late at night -copy another person's work -sit in class with your head down How does this benefit me as a student? This is all about your benefit, actually. If you "attend the lecture," you are getting my full attention. You have the opportunity to learn from me as well as your peers. You can ask questions, get feedback on your work, and get better during every single lesson! You will see yourself grow as a reader and thinker. Your writing will get better, and you will feel more confident! You will be better prepared for tests and essays. You also will have a better chance of finishing early so that you can do other things! Perhaps you can even earn some game time, or a prize! The possibilities are endless! :) In short, don't miss the lecture. Be present. Be prepared. THANK YOU! |
