Independent Students will have 30 minutes to finish their Final Performance Task from yesterday. Independent: Today is the FINAL PERFORMANCE TASK for Call of the Wild! WE MADE IT!! Students will be given a copy of Jack London’s essay “To Build A Fire,” and the following prompt: In “To Build a Fire”, Jack London makes bold claims about the role of instincts and the importance of nature. While it may seem that his claims focus on animals, he ultimately has messages for humans. Select one of these topics – instincts or nature –and answer the following question: In “To Build a Fire”, what does London suggest about the role of instincts OR the importance of nature for humans? Write a multi-paragraph response, in which you pay attention to London’s message and craft. Today’s performance task will be administered in the style of a state test, as dictated by the AF Curriculum. Teachers will NOT be able to assist students with comprehension, definitions of words, or writing feedback. We will be providing a planning tool for students to utilize prior to writing their essay. We will also provide a suggested structure and the following CFS: Criteria for Success (CFS):

RL.7.3 Objective: SWBAT evaluate whether or not Buck is fulfilled living with John Thornton by actively participating in a collaborative discussion. Do Now: Review the word of the day for Lesson 14. Today’s word is “fulfillment.” It is not used directly in The Call of the Wild, but it is a key term that we will be using to discuss today’s essential question. Answer warm-up questions. Direct/Collaborative: Debrief warm-up questions and complete Temperature Check for CFS #1. Analyze p.52-55 in the sections: “To Buck...lonely beaches.” (52) “Spring came...did not reason about them at all.” (52-53) “Irresistible impulses...timber wolf.” (53-54) “Buck did not attack...sky overhead.” (54-55) “They stopped...cursed him lovingly.” (55) “For two days...never raised.” (55) For each section, either the teacher or students will read. Students will be released in each section to find 1 piece of evidence for either the CLAIM or COUNTERCLAIM. There will be 2 pieces for section 6. Students should write their full claim/counterclaim, and fill in each piece of evidence into the appropriate graphic organizer on page 2 of their packet. Students will then choose their stance for the collaborative discussion and complete the prep work on page 3 of their packet. Students will then engage in a Collaborative Discussion. Today, students will be reading p.47-55 in the text, and filling out their Independent Reading Sheet. Students that are caught up will have time to catch up on iReady assignments. Students that have been unprepared will be working to catch up to the rest of the class. *As of today, all makeup work is to be done on your own time.
