Unit Behavior Contract with parent signature DUE TOMORROW. 5. Vocab. Packet due WEDNESDAY Standards: RL 7.2 Objectives: SWBAT define "dehumanization" and describe how and why dehumanization occurs by exploring primary and secondary sources. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are beginning a unit that is deeply tragic and contains mature content. Due to the recent, tragic, and deplorable massacre that took place at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, we are asking all students to proceed with great empathy and great maturity. With that being said, we are requiring scholars to sign a contract in which they agree to act respectfully throughout this unit. Breaches of this contract (including inappropriate jokes, hateful comments, or generally disrespectful speech/actions) will result in serious consequences (i.e. removal from class, mandatory parent conference, mandatory workshop). At Alliance MIT, we respect and care for others, and look forward to this opportunity to learn and grow together. Today, we are starting our 2nd novel study, Night by Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel wrote Night as memoir detailing his experience during the Holocaust. Before we can engage with this text, we must answer some crucial questions about how the Holocaust was able to happen. Here are three questions everyone will need to be able to answer by the end of class: 1.What is dehumanization? 2. How does dehumanization happen? 3. Why does dehumanization happen? To answer these questions, we will read 3 short but critically important texts. DIRECT: Source 1 (Interview with Franz Stangl) To begin our understanding of how the Holocaust was able to happen, we will read an interview from a man named Franz Stangl, who saw the atrocities of the Holocaust firsthand. We will begin to consider our first question, "What is dehumanization?" As a class, we will read and annotate this interview. In your annotations, you should have written/highlighted evidence to answer these questions: What was Mr. Stangl's role during the Holocaust? Where did Mr. Stangl give this interview? How did Mr. Stangl view his prisoners? INDEPENDENT- Sources B and C Scholars will complete guided annotations for Genocide Watch's "Definition of Dehumanization" and various Nazi Propaganda Images. We will be checking in and debriefing as a class periodically. EXIT TICKET- Complete independently and answer today's essential questions. INDEPENDENT PART II Scholars will have a Holocaust Webquest to complete. Make your own copy of the webquest (below) and name it FIRST NAME, LAST NAME- HOLOCAUST WEBQUEST. Please share it with me. MAKE A COPY OF THE WEBQUEST CLICK HERE FOR WEBQUEST LINKS. *****Do NOT FORGET: You HAVE HOMEWORK TONIGHT. YOU MUST GET THE CONTRACT SIGNED BY YOUR PARENT, AND COMPLETE THE READING/ANNOTATIONS/QUESTION. ********* https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe582xM03B1_Z7hafL-lbBrQFHwdsatcVIuEwm9uO473XeP_g/viewform
