Study for your vocabulary quiz (Monday) **You are being quizzed on DEFINITIONS DUE TODAY Signed syllabus and materials 3 passed iReady lessons (unless you are still taking the diagnostic or only finished the diagnostic on Thursday) Standards California History 7.2.1 Identify the physical features and describe the climate of the Arabian peninsula, its relationship to surrounding bodies of land and water, and nomadic and sedentary ways of life California History 7.2.5 Describe the growth of cities and the establishment of trade routes among Asia, Africa, and Europe, the products and inventions that traveled along these routes (e.g., spices, textiles, paper, steel, new crops), and the role of merchants in Arab society. Objective SWBAT explain how the geography of the Arabian Peninsula contributed to its growth as a trading center in the medieval period by using secondary source documents. Do Now- 10 minutes Scholars will have 10 minutes to read descriptions of 4 nations/empires (Greece, Rome, Qin dynasty, Han dynasty). Then, they will be asked to summarize two elements that the empires share. Direct Ms. Francavillo will introduce scholars to our first history unit: Islam! Our powerpoint will be focusing on the geography of the Arabian peninsula. Ms. Francavillo will guide students in a reading of their first secondary source document. Our goal is to find the central idea of the document. Collaborative Scholars will be tasked with reading another secondary source document and finding the central idea. Independent Scholars will then be asked to practice reading and finding the central idea of a third document. This will serve as today's exit ticket. With any time left over, scholars will be working on iReady assignments. HOMEWORK CORNER

Study for your vocabulary quiz (Monday) **You are being quizzed on DEFINITIONS DUE TODAY - Standards Review of 6th grade HIST Objective SWBAT review 6th grade Ancient Civilizations by creating and presenting a symbolic body poster. Do Now- 10 minutes Scholars will have a choice of Do Now: Read silently, or study for Monday's vocabulary quiz. Direct- Timeline Review, 15 minutes Ms. Francavillo will lead the class in a review of timeline structure, as well as the terms BC, BCE, AD, and CE. Collaborative- Finish Body Poster, 20 minutes Scholars will have 20 minutes to complete and color their body posters in their teams from last week. Presentations- 30 minutes Each group will come up to the front and present their body poster to the class. Finally, each group will be assigned a color, and will be asked to come to the board to fill in our giant timeline of civilizations! HOMEWORK CORNER

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. Objectives SWBAT explain how The Fun They Had is an example of speculative fiction by writing a level 3/4 CEEEEL paragraph. Do Now- 10 minutes Students will read silently and gather appropriate materials for class. Direct- 15 minutes Ms. Francavillo will introduce the class to today's task: Scholars will be writing a CEEEEL paragraph in response to the question, "How is The Fun They Had an example of speculative fiction?" Scholars will be asked to use evidence from the text to support their claims. We will be going through the rubric and expectations for writing together. Collaborative/Independent Scholars will have an opportunity to gather evidence for their writing by using a graphic organizer. Some scholars will be working in independent, while others will be working with a partner. After completing the graphic organizer, scholars will type their responses into Peer Grade. All responses must be submitted by 9AM for NYU and 11 AM for Eagles. Scholars will then be grading one another anonymously on Peer Grade. Vocabulary quiz will be on MONDAY DUE TODAY Vocabulary Definitions Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. Objective SWBAT summarize Isaac Asimov's The Fun They Had by completing CATCH notes and comprehension questions with a partner. Do Now- 10 minutes Students will be given a brief review activity for speculative fiction while Ms. Francavillo checks vocabulary homework. **Students without the homework completed will be staying for lunch. This is mandatory. STATION 1: Collaborative (45 minutes) Half of the class will start in collaborative station. These groups will be completing the CATCH notes, questions, and summary for The Fun They Had. Students will be provided with a rubric to help guide their writing. Exit Ticket- Completed summary STATION 2: Independent (45 minutes) Students in the independent station will be working on either completing the iReady diagnostic (if it is not already finished) or continuing their individual iReady lessons. **Scholars are expected to pass 3 iReady lessons per week. DUE TODAY - Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.2 Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.6 Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others. Objectives 1. SWBAT determine how Neil Gaiman defines speculative fiction and its purpose by reading, annotating, and discussing the introduction to Fahrenheit 451. 2. SWBAT determine the central ideas in The Fun They Had by completing CATCH notes, writing a summary, and answering comprehension questions with a partner. Do Now- 10 minutes Scholars will complete a brief vocabulary activity. Direct- 45 minutes (Guided Reading) As we read Neil Gaiman’s introduction to Fahrenheit 451 together, scholars will be asked to stop and consider a question about the text. Scholars will have 2-3 minutes to write their answers with their partner. You must write in complete sentences! We will debrief each question together. By the end of this section, scholars should be able to determine how Neil Gaiman defines speculative fiction! We will then spend time "attacking the prompt" of our lesson's 3 multiple choice questions. ***These questions will be graded! Collaborative- 45 minutes (Partner Reading) With their assigned partners, scholars will read the short story The Fun They Had. Together, scholars will complete the provided CATCH notes and comprehension questions. Ms. Francavillo will monitor students to ensure that they are completing the assignment in the allotted time: 10 minutes to read 15 minutes to complete CATCH 15 minutes to complete comprehension questions Comprehension questions and CATCH notes will be turned in to be reviewed by Ms. Francavillo. Independent- 50 minutes Students will spend half of class continuing the iReady diagnostic test for Reading. Students that finish early will fill out the iReady Data Chat Sheet with Ms. Francavillo privately. Collaborative- 50 minutes Students will finish creating their Ancient Civilizations body posters. SWBAT demonstrate their current reading abilities by taking the iReady diagnostic assessment. 2. SWBAT review 6th grade Ancient Civilizations by creating a symbolic body poster. Do Now- 10 minutes Students will be provided with their log in information and will be asked to log onto the computers. We will take the first 10 minutes of class to log on and get through the Z-Scaler portal. When finished, students will read silently. Independent- 50 minutes Students will spend half of class taking the iReady diagnostic test for Reading. We will go through a brief presentation explaining how the test works. Students will be taking the test on the computer silently and independently. We will continue testing tomorrow. Collaborative- 50 minutes Ms. Francavillo will introduce the mini-project. In this project, students will be reviewing an ancient civilization from 6th grade and creating a symbolic body poster to represent the culture of the civilization. Groups will be presenting on Friday. We will also be creating a giant timeline to help us review BCE and CE/AD! Standards N/A Objectives SWBAT understand and internalize our classroom rules, routines, and procedures. Direct (30 minutes) Ms. Francavillo will welcome all students to Alliance MIT (returning and new!) and introduce our classroom norms, rules, expectations, and routines. We will also go over the syllabus. Collaborative 1 (40 minutes) Students read the syllabus in collaborative groups and present their findings to the class. Students will also brainstorm sentence frames for collaborative discussion. We will record these sentence frames and keep them posted in the classroom. Collaborative II (40 minutes) Students will work in groups to decode a puzzle regarding growth mindset! |
